Modern restaurant Salt has been praised for its creative approach to Alaskan cuisine. Using fresh seafood, butcher cut steaks and seasonal ingredients to create its unique menu, Salt is an exciting place to stop by for dinner on your visit to Juneau. Expect dishes such as herb brined pork shoulder and king crab risotto, paired with exceptional wines.

Where to eat in Icy Strait Point on your cruise to Alaska

With hiking trails, kayaking trips, and even whale-watching tours available in this beautiful city, the sky is the limit for adventure. Whale watching tours are the most popular excursions in Juneau. On our first trip to Alaska, we had a fabulous whale watching experience, which I share on my post, Juneau whale-watching tours which guides you in choosing the best ones. The Red Dog Saloon has had several different locations here in town. Originally the saloon was located about 2 blocks up Franklin street and later across the street next to the Alaskan Hotel.

Skagway, Alaska, is situated along Alaska’s southeastern coast, nestled at the northernmost point of the Inside Passage. The town sits above the top of a glacier-fed fjord, with the Skagway Cruise Port sitting along its southern coast. Planning an Alaska cruise that departs from or stops at Skagway Cruise Port? It is an accepted fact of life for those residing here that plans can change quickly. Flights are grounded out of an abundance of caution and the tides will dictate what can and cannot be done along the waterways.

Mendenhall Visitors Centre This is the visitors centre you will find at the Mendenhall glacier. It has excellent exhibitions inside explaining what a glacier is and the life span of the Mendenhall glacier. Visit the visitors centre by excurion, glacier express bus or public bus. If you want to experience something unique we highly recommend an excursion by helicopter to the Mendenhall glacier.

On the menu you’ll find beautiful vegetarian wraps, generous salads, noodles, biscuits with Spam, breakfast hash, fried rice, pork belly and brisket. There are lots of options for gluten-free and dairy-free diners. And, if you’re in the mood, you can let the witches and warlocks behind the counter choose your soup or sandwich. For the best experience, you’ll want to turn away from the wharf, which is located in a part of town that only lights up during tourist season, toward the businesses that are open year-round. With a car, you can drive to “the valley,” as it’s called in Juneau, where you’ll find a slower pace, lovely scenery, and places with mostly local clientele.

Be sure to order the Thai iced tea and try your crab with some Thai dipping sauce (butter is also available for the less adventurous among us). No trip to Skagway is complete without a visit to the iconic Red Onion Saloon. This local landmark has been around since the Gold Rush Era.

There are no roads leading in or out of Juneau, which actually makes it a great choice for cruising (as it must be accessed by air or by water). Being surrounded by unspoiled nature, Juneau is a cruise port that offers visitors a number of unique shore excursion options from whale watching to glacier viewing. Most cruise ships are docked just a few minutes' walk from Downtown Juneau, so consider a visit to the Capitol building or a pit stop at the Alaskan Brewing Co. before or after your excursion. Annabelle’s is also a good choice if your group has diverse food preferences (there are many non-seafood items as well as gluten free and vegetarian options). Annabelle’s is conveniently located a short walk from where the cruise ships dock downtown (or where the shuttle buses drop off NCL passengers coming from Ward Cove). Check the website for the current menu (it changes seasonally).

The Red Onion Saloon was opened in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush as a bordello for miners. Today it doubles as a restaurant and bar on the ground floor and a brothel museum upstairs. While the restaurant is known more for it’s history and ambiance than the quality of the food, you can get a good bowl of chili and some decent pizza here (skip the nachos). The Cookery is a highly rated farm-to-table restaurant located in an old saloon.

With its prime location and variety of facilities, the port welcomes travelers to explore the stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture that Juneau has to offer. Juneau, Alaska’s remote yet remarkably accessible capital, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. A city that can only be reached by sea, air or birth canal will rely on transportation other than cars. Float planes are the way to go in Juneau and they are also great for sightseeing. Consider taking a flight seeing tour over the Taku glacier, Mendenhall glacier or Glacier Bay. This truly is one of the best experiences you could ever treat yourself to.

Plus, you can feel great about your purchase since this is a non-profit store. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center welcomes you to learn about this beautiful glacier and its surrounding area. If you want to do something specific, booking it in advance is best. You can save money by booking through an independent operator rather than with one of the cruise lines. There is plenty of outdoor seating and I recommend ordering the halibut tacos.

The bridge takes about one hour to drive on the Klondike Highway, so most cruise passengers will visit by booking a tour excursion. These guided excursions are filled with other stops and offer plenty of opportunities to see Alaska’s iconic wildlife. Visiting Skagway offers cruise passengers a wide range of outdoor adventure and exploration opportunities. Beyond Skagway’s small-town charm and famed ties to the Gold Rush Era, the surrounding area offers breathtaking views of the rugged Alaskan wilderness. All over town and especially around the docks you will find there is a local shuttle bus offered to the Mendenhall Visitors Centre where you will have a good view over the glacier.

Enjoy local cuisine while your kids play in safe, fun-filled areas. They also have two on-site food trucks, The Wild Alaskan Food Truck and the Forno Rosso, serving seafood, burgers, and wood-fired pizza. Tracy’s Crab Shack is a great place to eat seafood, especially if you want crab legs. Glacier Silt Soap is a popular gift shop in Juneau that offers an assortment of handmade soaps.

The good news is that each tram carries 60 people and one runs every five minutes. And, locals ride the tram as well – the perfect opportunity to ask about where to go and what to see while in town. Voted the number one restaurant in the 2014 and 2015 Juneau Empire Readers’ Choice Awards, it’s safe to say The Rookery Café is well-loved in the city. Stop for breakfast to enjoy an Alaskan twist on the classic eggs benedict, with Amalga Distillery Juneauper Gin cured sockeye salmon, or pop by for a warming coffee and cake while exploring the city.
