There are no roads leading in or out of Juneau, which actually makes it a great choice for cruising (as it must be accessed by air or by water). Being surrounded by unspoiled nature, Juneau is a cruise port that offers visitors a number of unique shore excursion options from whale watching to glacier viewing. Most cruise ships are docked just a few minutes' walk from Downtown Juneau, so consider a visit to the Capitol building or a pit stop at the Alaskan Brewing Co. before or after your excursion. Annabelle’s is also a good choice if your group has diverse food preferences (there are many non-seafood items as well as gluten free and vegetarian options). Annabelle’s is conveniently located a short walk from where the cruise ships dock downtown (or where the shuttle buses drop off NCL passengers coming from Ward Cove). The Red Onion Saloon was opened in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush as a bordello for miners. Today it doubles as a restaurant and bar on the ground floor and a brothel museum upstairs. While the restaurant is known more for it’s history and ambiance than the quality of the food, you can get a good bowl of chili and some decent pizza here (skip the nachos). The Cookery is a highly rated farm-to-table restaurant located in an old saloon.

If you want to do something specific, booking it in advance is best. You can save money by booking through an independent operator rather than with one of the cruise lines. There is plenty of outdoor seating and I recommend ordering the halibut tacos.

They also have two on-site food trucks, The Wild Alaskan Food Truck and the Forno Rosso, serving seafood, burgers, and wood-fired pizza. Tracy’s Crab Shack is a great place to eat seafood, especially if you want crab legs. Glacier Silt Soap is a popular gift shop in Juneau that offers an assortment of handmade soaps.
The good news is that each tram carries 60 people and one runs every five minutes. And, locals ride the tram as well – the perfect opportunity to ask about where to go and what to see while in town. Voted the number one restaurant in the 2014 and 2015 Juneau Empire Readers’ Choice Awards, it’s safe to say The Rookery Café is well-loved in the city. Stop for breakfast to enjoy an Alaskan twist on the classic eggs benedict, with Amalga Distillery Juneauper Gin cured sockeye salmon, or pop by for a warming coffee and cake while exploring the city.
